How to cancel cable TV in Ontario and keep your internet

People cancel TV and then discover the Leafs are gone for three days while they shop for an app. Reverse it. This is the Ontario order of operations — complementary to cut the cord Canada, Bell Fibe vs IPTV and cancel Rogers Ignite, which argue the why. This page is the how.

Step 0 — do not cancel this week

Start the 24-hour IPTV trial on the TV you actually sit on. Watch one live sports window and one local-news hour. If that fails, fix wifi (buffering) or walk away. Cable will still be there on Monday.

Step 1 — know which product you are cancelling

• Rogers: Ignite TV vs Ignite Internet are different lines on the bill. You want TV gone, internet kept.
• Bell: Fibe TV vs Fibe Internet. Same idea. The ONT on the wall is internet — do not let a rep “pick up the whole Fibe.”
• A building hospitality package may be a third party. Ask the property manager, not only the Rogers chat bot.

Step 2 — screenshot the bill and the contract end date

Early cancellation fees live on the TV term, not the laws of physics. If you are 4 months into 24, ask the rep for the TV-only ETF. Sometimes they will move you to internet-only without a fight because TV margins are not what they were. Have the pricing page open so you know the IPTV yearly number ($79) while they talk.

Step 3 — the phone / chat script

1. “I want to disconnect television only. Internet stays at this address.”
2. “Do not send a technician to remove the ONT / coax unless you are changing internet.”
3. “What is the last bill that includes TV? I will return the set-top after that date.”
4. If they bundle-scare you: “I already have another way to watch Sportsnet and TSN.” You do not owe them a brand name.

Step 4 — return hardware so they stop renting it

Rogers and Bell will keep charging a receiver rental if the box sits in a closet. Use their return kit or a branded store. Photograph the serial. Keep the modem / ONT.

Step 5 — lock the living-room setup

Firestick, Apple TV or the Smart TV app should already be logged in from the trial. Pay the prepaid IPTV plan on WhatsApp before the cable expiry night if a playoff game matters. Two screens: multi-screen GTA.
